Should I leave a hand crank light charged?
I have an emergency light/radio that has a hand cranked rechargeable battery. Should I leave it charged or discharged?

Will the battery go bad if I leave it charged or uncharged?

Answer by CityZen
It depends upon the battery type.

NiMH & Lithium batteries should be stored charged.
These types of batteries should not be allowed to fully discharge, and so you should recharge them periodically.

NiCad batteries should be stored discharged.

Emergency crank radio/flashlight with built in USB port for charging iphone?
I live in earthquake prone California and am one crank radio/flashlight short of completing my emergency earthquake kit.

And while I've found a few that do claim to have built in ports to charge "cell phones", none of them say what type of cell phone they charge, or even what kind of port it is.

Does anyone know of an emergency crank radio flashlight with a 2.0 USB port that will charge an iPhone? It just seems like an obvious addition to the device, but I can't find anything online. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Answer by Fedora
Eton has some that have usb 2.0. Most of them are available at radio shack.

Beware though, it is not very practical to charge cell phones on crank/solar devices. It does work in emergencies, but you have to crank a long time to get even 1 minute of cell usage. Although I suppose it is better then nothing, and if it is a major emergency, it would be worth it.
